SAN FRANCISCO – September 25, 2003 – The inimitable Bruce Bellingham mentioned the SF FACES show in his column in the Examiner and included an anecdoate about one of the more interesting photo shoots from the project. According to the blurb, “Why was Robert Hemphill, owner of the Dreaming Room tribal art gallery, standing in the middle of Columbus outside City Lights Books at rush hour the other night — bare-chested, snared in a sarong, face splashed with wild colors, clutching a spear? He slowed traffic even in San Francisco. Robert was posing for John Doffing’s project, SF FACES . John is collecting portraits of local characters. They include poets, socialites, rappers, strippers (or unwrappers), cops, firemen, writers, politicos, servers, artists, athletes, hod carriers, bartenders, quasimodos and quasi-quasimodos. The faces will be unveiled during a bash at Mezzanine on Sept. 25 at 8 p.m. In order to save face, be there…”
