So yesterday I perused First Thursdays, the monthly open gallery night here in San Francisco. I started off at SF Camerawork to check out their First Exposure book release and opening. First Exposures is a cool programs that pairs mentors to kids on a one-to-one basis and was something that I was personally interested in since we at Orange are going to be launching an improved version of our Social Photography program this year.
Afterwards, I headed over to 49 Geary to check out the multitude of galleries.
Well, you can’t seem to go to a gallery without hearing Hieronymus Bosch mentioned in a usually pretentious tone, but there were some amazing pieces by Clinton Fein that had a visceral and post-modern relevance to Bosch. The exhibit was at the Toomey-Tourell Gallery and was entitled Torture.
A different type of social commentary was seen at the gregory lind gallery entitled Wabi Ranch: Paintings by Jake Longstreth, that is on display until Jan 27th. Check it out and see if you can’t immediately recognize every scene. My favorite thing is the security cam on the side of the building in the piece entitled Vacaville.
The most packed gallery might have been Catharine Clark where a solid group show was going on. Make it a resolution to experience more art!
