Oftentimes I find that the very first shot taken turns out quite interesting. The subjects are usually relaxed in the sense that it’s not an ‘official’ shot but more to get composition, lighting, etc. In this case, I was shooting the overall champion of the 2006 Ironman figure championships, Halcyon Duarte, the morning after the competition and we finally got some sun and some warmth. She was just getting ready when I snapped this.
Today we photographed the Heroes and Hearts benefit at Union Square and as is the case for any event where our illustrious mayor is present, he’s mobbed by folks and especially photographers (hopefully when he sees us, he doesn’t cringe too much). Anyhow I go this one which ended up looking kinda funny with the photographer sticking his camera right at him while he tried to enjoy some art.
One of the nice things about shooting events is the exposure you get to a broad range of topics. Earlier this week I covered the first ever “Ending Domestic Violence and Human Trafficking in the 21st Century” conference at the new UCSF Mission Bay campus (it was actually the first conference ever held there). After shooting at SFMOMA for their Member Sessions I ended up at Popscene where a British band HARD-Fi was playing. Since I had my gear with me, I decided to take a few snaps of the band, especially their intense-looking lead singer, Richard Archer.

In the advertising world (where a lot of our background comes from) there were the awards for the creations that never made the client cut, many of which were the best creative executions for various campaigns. Not quite along those lines, but fun nonetheless are the test shots we have to do to get lighting set for our shoots. This […]
