So I was glad to see New York Times columnist David Pogue write up something about the whole megapixel race and why it’s overhyped. As professionals we often get asked “How many megapixels is that?!” and usually people are expecting some huge number that eclipses whatever camera they are using. However unlike some things, size doesn’t matter beyond a certain point and Pogue’s article illustrates this as will his upcoming special on the Discovery Channel about the same thing.
Ultimately the most important thing is the eye behind the glass and what you are capturing – but of course you’re going to hear that from photographers. I’ve got a friend Nathan Koch who does a lot of work with toy cameras and gets amazing images. A lot of pros also use Holgas and they get some pretty incredible stuff. So the bottom line is: don’t get sucked into the vortex of megapixels!!!
