I was down in Los Angeles last week and was able to stop by the newly opened Annenberg Space for Photography. Their site describes it as a place for “celebrating the human condition as seen through the lens of some of the world’s most renowned photographers.” Nice! and how extra nice that admission is free. Exhibits are an interesting combination of prints and digital displays (even in the bathrooms), like flat screens, touch table-tops, and a relaxed theater space showing interviews and profiles of the photographers talking about their featured work. The multimedia presentation provided some great context, especially learning about the creators and getting a feel for their personalities, and I appreciate that the Space is offering up an opportunity for interaction and an enhanced experience with photography. The most major peeve was some of the smaller digital displays seemed out of place and there was technology failure where the videos weren’t projecting properly. In general, I was pleased to see images by photojournalists and fine art photographers featured side-by-side. Looks like photographer/filmmaker Lauren Greenfield is lecturing May 21st (bummer — all those events are sold out).
