Preparing for
your Headshot

To prepare for the shoot, dress professionally and have your hair styled and make-up done (unless you have included a hair and make-up specialist as part of your package). Some men find it helpful to use a little cover-up for unexpected skin irritations. It can help to practice in front of a mirror prior to the shoot to get an idea of the look/feel you want for your photo.

Clothing Suggestions

  • If you are receiving a headshot as part of a company package, double check that your organization does not have specific clothing guidelines or a dress code.
  • Clothing should fit well, and be comfortable with minimal detail
Textured clothing is great—leather, denim, corduroy, knits/sweaters if it is allowed in your company dress code
  • Avoid logos and bold or busy patterns (they distract from the face)
  • Review the look/feel of your session and determine the background color for more direction in terms of what colors to wear and avoid – For example a white shirt on a white background may not be ideal.
  • Layers (t-shirt, button shirt, sports jacket) look interesting and may camouflage a slim frame
  • Choose jewelry/accessories wisely; Less is more
  • If time allots, bring 1-2 additional selections of tops, sweaters, shirts, jackets and just a few matching pants/skirts

What to expect in your session

Your photographer is specially trained to be a friendly liaison between you and your image and may help lighten the mood with conversation and even a few jokes. Some tips when it comes to your close-up.

Your headshot session can last from 5 mins to 25 mins, depending on the format of headshot session.

  • RELAX – tension can be seen and perceived even through a smile.
  • Stay loose and move around. Changing your expression, hand placement and weight on your feet all help to refresh your expression and provide a more natural capture.
  • Consider alternatives to your standard look – such as images with your glasses removed if you wear them, or remove your jacket if applicable.
  • Finally – HAVE FUN! Laughing, joking and lightening the mood, to an extent, can do wonders for a more natural look.

How to select your image for retouching

Depending on how your headshot session was booked, the selection of the final image may be up to you or someone from your company. If you’re making the selection, here are some tips to consider:

  • When you are viewing your images don’t focus on any flyaway hairs, lint or blemishes. Those are easily fixed when you have a retouching package.
  • If you are having a hard time deciding on a photo we recommend getting a second opinion from your significant other or a trusted coworker.
