Girly men…

Last night I was covering the 2007 NPC Contra Costa Bodybuilding, Fitness and Figure Championships and guest posing was current Mr. Olympia Jay Cutler. He’s always known to go out into the crowds to pose and did that once again to the delight of the fans (even those in the balcony).

Young Musicians

The Youth Orchestra celebrated it’s 25th anniversary and ask us to do some portraits their press releases. Even young musicians had busy lives and i only had a few minutes with each of them; such is the nature of ‘celebrity’ portraiture. I tried out a new portable lighting trick – two 580 flashes and an umbrella and i like the results thus far.

First Fridays – Phoenix, AZ, USA (photo by Betsy Schneider)

Having a few days in between my shoots, I was lucky enough to find out about First Fridays in downtown Phoenix, which is apparently the largest art opening type of event in the US. It’s like the First Thursdays we have in San Francisco, but I was taken by how many families were strolling about with their kids exposing them to all sorts of arts and expressionism. It was great to also see kids artwork on display [...]

TED Talks – Nachtwey, Burtynsky and more

I’m a huge fan of James Nachtwey and you can check out his excellent presentation from TED this year online. The TED website is great because they have all the presentations from the conference online. Edward Burtynksky is also another of my favorite photographers and his presentation from 2005 is also online. They’re both about 30 minutes but well worth viewing. The site has as log of other good content too from luminaries like Phil Borges and [...]

If you pick up the latest issue of SFiS throughout San Francisco you’ll see Orange photographers Jack Huynh, Vasna Wilson and Gene X Hwang’s work featured in a variety of spreads. The cover was shot by John Lee who does some really nice work, but pop it open and check out some of the Orange crews work!

Team Effort

This week we were shooting in San Diego for a large corporate gig. We’ve worked with Mark Ross a lot as he’s one of our primary shooters for San Diego for portraits. We had eight people shooting on one day and this is one of the shots of the 400+ headshots we powered through. It’s always nice to work with teams as you can share ideas, techniques, etc. We set up the lights slightly differently that I [...]

Anna and the Elephant

The weather in Las Vegas was a bit cooler than we anticipated so we had to adjust but it’s always about flexibility when you shoot on location. We had planned shooting out in the desert and did for a little bit but on the way back to the Strip we passed this elephant on the side of the road, and had to take a shot… (model: Anna Tomasiello)

Baby Names

So I was reading the January 2007 issue of National Geographic, and there’s an article about baby names and since we do a bit of infant and baby portraiture, I thought it was interesting compared to the babies we’ve met and photographed. Top Ten Baby Names: 2005 Boys | Girls 1) Jacob | Emily 2) Michael | Emma 3) Joshua | Madison 4) Matthew | Abigail 5) Ethan | Olivia 6) Andrew | Isabella 7) Daniel | [...]
