So we like to keep up with what other small businesses are doing and thought we’d share some of the better business books we’ve read that are helping our studio do well during this tough time with the economy.
Two that stand out are Small Giants by Bo Burlingham and Raising the Bar: Integrity and Passion in Life and Business: The Story of Clif Bar & Co.by CLIF bar founder Gary Erickson. We also have incorporated a lot of what Chip Conley wrote in his book Peak (reviewed here). One of the things that Erickson emphasizes is that if you want to keep control over how you do business, that it’s important to stay independant and not take outside funding. We’ve bootstrapped Orange and ran it out of our own flat in the beginning and slowly and organically grown the business. Over the past eight years we’ve slowly done business the way we have wanted to including always having a socially conscious perspective and balancing work and life (although both Jack and I have to admit that we probably work too much, but when you love and are passionate about your work it’s not that bad). Anyhow, we’ve spoken at conferences and hosted seminars at our studio as well – if you are interested in talking to us more please don’t hesitate to contact us directly!
