We had a grand time shooting the gala opening for The Birth of Cool exhibit at the Oakland Museum. We set up a greenscreen photo station to recreate the above Julius Shulman image, “Case Study House #21”. The original 1958 image (left) features Pierre Koenig, the architect of the house, standing at the stereo. While poking around the web, I found some images of the same house, that Shulman returned to shoot fifty years later when it [...]

Film (analog) and the romanticism of vignetting

One of the things that’s obvious with digital when it first came out was the lack of vignetting (unless you were using a really crappy lens or toy camera). With the advent of the full frame sensors I saw a return of the vignette and with Lightroom being a popular tool and one we use quite a bit here at Orange, I’ve noticed how romantic an image can become with the vignetting. I don’t know if this [...]

Edward Burtynsky and Manufactured Landscapes – interview

2017-07-24T20:48:20-07:00By |Categories: Photography, Point of View|Tags: , , , , , |

There’s a nice interview with Edward Burtynsky on To the Best of Our Knowledge that ran this weekend. I heard it last night night and you can listen to the podcast online. Jennifer Baichwal produced the film Manufactured Landscapes about Burtynsky’s work, and it’s an excellent film which is now available on DVD. If you haven’t seen Burtynsky’s work before, it’s highly recommended to view it preferably in a gallery environment since the impact of the imagery [...]

The Freight Elevator with Aida

I’ve been using the freight elevator for a few shots when I do studio work with physique athletes and today used the back side of the elevator to get some silhouetted shots. I like how the edge lighting works on the silhouette when the light bounces around the elevator shaft. This is IFBB Professional figure athlete Aida Aragon who is competing next weekend in Dallas, TX.

Juliana Jade

This past weekend I was covering the USA Figure and Bodybuilding Championships. I had met Juliana in Seattle earlier in the year and she was competing at the show so we set up a shoot. She’s a great model and although it was ridiculously hot outside, we got some nice shots in. This was just laying on a rare patch of grass while the 2nd shot was in a fake rock cave – how very Vegas!

Another successful year with our photo station set up on the sidewalk. fortunately(?), there were so many people running on the sidewalk that a number of them became part of the shoot. You can see more on my blog or view the complete online gallery.
